In 2003, SKISA hosted the 8th SKIF World Karate Championships in Durban. This event was endorsed by Kancho Kanazawa, the Grandmaster of SKIF as well as the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Professor Fatima Meer (biographer of Nelson Mandela) and Madiba (Nelson Mandela).
Due to the then national governing body (KASA) being in disarray, SKISA being a member of the Martial Arts Association of South Africa (MAASA), was given an opportunity to obtain National colours for its team. Mr Eddie Jacobsen, the Chairperson of MAASA, applied and recommended to the then SASC (Sports Commission) that Protea Colours be awarded to the SKI-SA Team. This was granted and certificates (signed by the CEO Mr Gideon Sam) and Protea Colours were officially presented to the team by Dr Sam Ramsamy (then NOCSA president) and MEC for Sport and Education in KZN, the Minister Narend Singh at an official function held in the Phoenix Technikon in Kwa Zulu Natal.
